Description for blind and low-vision visitors

On a vivid yellow ground dotted with tiny dashes, a large fantastic bird rises with a long S-curved blue neck, a crested head and an open beak. Its plump body is covered in rows of stippling and big oval medallions in blue, turquoise, brown and orange, and it seizes a blue-and-red fish below with its clawed feet, as if hunting. Green and blue foliage sprigs and a small dark insect-like form decorate the background. The naïve style fills the surface with fine pattern; a signature and the year sit at lower left.

The signature

Detail of the painted signature: «FOZILVA»
The canvas is signed “FOZILVA”, in the lower left corner. The D and the S are reversed, so it reads as the artist's usual signature, “F. D. Silva”. Beside it sits the painter's thumbprint.
